Common questions
Answers before you call
What is the difference between private health insurance and Marketplace plans?
Private health insurance plans and Marketplace plans are both ACA-compliant medical insurance, meaning they follow Affordable Care Act rules and include the same essential health benefits, such as hospital care and prescription drugs. The difference is where you buy them and how you can pay for them. Private health insurance, also called off-market or off-exchange, is purchased directly from the carrier and is not eligible for a subsidy. Marketplace plans, sometimes called Obamacare plans, are purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace, where you can apply a premium tax credit if you qualify, or waive it and pay the full premium.
Why can't I get a health insurance quote online?
A health insurance quote depends on details specific to you: your age, ZIP code, household size, tobacco use, and for Marketplace plans, your estimated household income for the year. Without those, any number on a screen is a placeholder rather than your actual rate. When you call, a licensed agent asks the questions needed to quote accurately and shows you the Florida health insurance plans available in your county.
Does working with a licensed agent cost me anything extra?
Working with a licensed health insurance agent costs you nothing extra. Plan premiums are set by the carrier and filed with the state, so you pay the same rate whether you enroll through a licensed agent, directly with the carrier, or on the Marketplace. Agents are compensated by the carrier, not by you. What an agent adds is time: asking the right questions about your doctors, prescriptions, and budget so you can compare plans against what you actually need.
